Literary Sessions with Mark Schenker : Short Fiction – The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) by Sarah Orne Jewett In-Person / Online
Our first book is a collection of inter-related short stories about the people who live in a small town on the coast of southern Maine in the mid-to-late 1900’s. The narrator is a writer with a keen sense of observation who spends a summer there. Her writing style is fresh and insightful, giving an intimate understanding of this unique culture that is shaped by its location on the coast and its dependence on the ocean for its livelihood. Henry James declared the work a “beautiful little quantum of achievement.” This selection will give everyone the chance to discover in Sarah Orne Jewett a writer who has been largely forgotten but still deserves to be read, for reasons that Mark will no doubt convincingly explain.
